Thesis (Ph.D.)--Stevens Institute of Technology, 2002.
The “Internet-based mobile ad hoc networks” have received increasing amount of attention, because their capabilities satisfy the requirements of mobile computing and various commercial mobile Internet applications, which are referred to as the emerging and future networking environments. Two distinctive features of mobile ad hoc networks are total wirelessness and high mobility. Unlike other types of wireless networks, such as cellular networks and wireless LANs, which only use wireless links between mobile users and base stations, the entire infrastructure of mobile ad hoc networks is based on the wireless links and every mobile node works not only as a mobile user but also as a base station (router).

Most popular Internet applications, such as the web browse and file transfer, use reliable data transport services supported by the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) which is the de facto standard transport layer protocol in the Internet nowadays. Conventional TCP tunes very well in the traditional wired Internet. However, it suffers a poor performance in the mobile ad hoc networking environments because of its inability to distinguish the causes of packet losses between network congestions and other reasons. In other words, conventional TCP assumes that all of packet losses are caused by network congestions and invokes the congestion control and avoidance algorithm which alleviates network congestions through reducing the TCP transmission rate. Nevertheless, besides network congestions, error-prone wireless links and route changes and breakages due to high mobility of mobile nodes also lead to the packet loss and out of order.

In this thesis, we make a systematic investigation and study on the performance issues of reliable data transport in mobile ad hoc networks. To solve the performance degradation issues of reliable data transport over mobile ad hoc networks, a new design methodology—the enhanced inter-layer control (ENIC) mechanism is proposed with the explicit route failure notification approach. The key ideas in our scheme are included: (1) Modifying and improving link layer, network layer and transport layer protocols. (2) Eliminating the adverse interactions among these layers. (3) Enhancing the inter-layer control and communications of control messages.

Our ENIC mechanism maintains the end-to-end TCP semantics and is compatible with conventional TCP implementations. Moreover, it is not only an enhanced version of TCP but also a systematic solution to improve the performance of reliable data transport in mobile ad hoc networks. We implemented the ENIC scheme based on the network simulator—ns-2. To evaluate and analyze its performance, extensive simulation experiments have been made under various combinations of bit error rates and mobility conditions. Comparing with the most widely used conventional TCP implementation—TCP Reno, our ENIC scheme significantly improves the performance of reliable data transport.
