Variation techniques and other theoretical issues in Morton Feldman's "carpet" compositions.
Gelleny, Sharon Ann.
Variation techniques and other theoretical issues in Morton Feldman's "carpet" compositions.
- 192 p.
Major Professor: Jeffrey Stadelmann.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 2000.
In the late 1970s, Morton Feldman began writing entire compositions based on highly repetitive motives. This stylistic trend coincided with his growing interest in the nomadic carpets of pre-twentieth century Anatolia. This dissertation examines four chamber works which feature highly repetitive motives: Spring of Chosroes, Why Patterns?, Patterns in a Chromatic Field, and Crippled Symmetry. The purpose of the research is to establish a general theoretic basis for these works and to investigate connections between Feldman's compositional techniques and the nomadic carpet-weaving aesthetic. In the dissertation, I define the concept of pattern and pattern area, and analyze the pitch materials, rhythm and meter, form and notation in the works under consideration. I also investigate how variation techniques are applied to patterns and how such techniques are analogous to the form and color variants found in nomadic carpet designs. Additional analytic details for each of the four compositions are provided, along with a discussion of Feldman's “carpet” music within the wider context of his lifetime achievements.
