Self-deception refers to behavior in which a person fools himself. It requires a functional split in the mind--a part to deceive and a part to be deceived. Versions of the Freudian unconscious are the best known accounts of self-deception. However, behavior described as self-deception can also be described as self-betrayal, which refers to Warner's analysis of violating one's own moral commitments. This paper details the advantages of self-betrayal theory over notions of self-deception.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A logical approach is used to show that self-deception is a contradictory notion. Empirically, it yields hypotheses about consciousness that are not confirmed in the literature. Further, attempts to demonstrate it in the laboratory have not been successful.

Self-betrayal is a unitary act of the whole person. It is shown to be adequate and consistent in accounting for apparent self-deception, including Freudian cases. Its major hypothesis is confirmed repeatedly in the literature, and it is shown to be a useful concept by allowing finer distinctions and being more parsimonious than self-deception.
