This present investigation examined the relationships between dependent career decision-making and five cultural variables (acculturation and vertical and horizontal aspects of individualism and collectivism) among Chinese American undergraduate college students (N = 110). It was hypothesized that acculturation and vertical and horizontal individualism and collectivism would act as significant predictors of dependent decision-making both when taken as a group and when examined individually. This study found support for a significant relationship between dependent decision-making and the five cultural variables when considered as a group. As predicted, a significant negative relationship between dependent decision-making and horizontal individualism was found. However, a significant positive relationship between dependent decision-making and vertical individualism was also found, an inverse relationship to that which was predicted. None of the other cultural variables (acculturation, vertical collectivism, or horizontal collectivism) made a significant unique contribution to the explained variance in dependent decision-making. These findings are discussed, and career counseling and research implications are addressed.
