This study described the relationship between exercise and blood sugar levels of elderly diabetic patients and established a health educational program that emphasized exercise for the elderly diabetic patients. More specifically, this study asked four pertinent research questions in an attempt to identify the information needs of elderly diabetics in order to encourage them to incorporate exercise into their lifestyles. To address the purpose of this descriptive study, a self-administered questionnaire and structured interview was used. The survey sought to collect data from a purposive sample of Tang-Tzu Village Health Center's diabetic patients who met the eligibility criteria of aged 65 and older, with diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and able to communicate verbally and in writing. The major findings of self-administered questionnaire indicated that, in these respondents, a relationship between regular exercise and blood sugar level was found to have negative correlation (−0.45277) with and a calculated p value of 0.0230. For the purpose of determining whether both exercise duration and frequency were related to blood sugar levels, the investigator weighted the time and the frequency of exercise behavior and calculated t-score and a Pearson correlation coefficient. In these respondents the weighted calculation produced p value of 0.0114. These findings show a significant relationship between exercise and blood sugar level in these respondents. The interview portion identified that these respondents not only integrated exercise into their lifestyle but also they were committed to maintaining an exercise program in order to support their desire to enjoy life without relying on others. This study described the benefits and values of exercise in a limited sample of elderly diabetics. It also identified the needs for culturally relevant educational preparation for health care providers, especially nurses, in order to develop awareness of the strategies and methods for influencing the development of health care providers that will appropriately assist the Taiwanese people.
