Thesis (Ph.D.)--Duke University, 2002.
This dissertation seeks to further our understanding of the kinds of social interactions that are most economically productive. While building on social resources and social capital research, a foundation is also sought in the work on productive social relations from 18<super>th</super> and 19<super>th</super> century social theorists, psychological research on the normative and natural patterns in social interaction, and both economic theory and economic empirical research. The central idea of this dissertation is that productive patterns of social interaction are similar to productive patterns of economic interaction. Since economists have examined productivity and economic prosperity as outcome variables for much longer than sociologists, it is argued that our understanding of productive social relationships could benefit from the insights already made in the study of productive economic relationships. Given the prominence of the work of Adam Smith in the study of productive economic relations, the absence of an in-depth discussion of how his “free trade” framework might inform the study of productive social relations is an import gap in the current social resources and social capital literature. This dissertation is designed, in part, to address that gap. Through the application of Adam Smith's free trade framework to the social world this understanding is given expression in the principle of free exchange, which states that productivity in the social world is a function of the division of labor, that this division of labor is limited by the extent of the social sphere, that the social sphere is expanded through a reduction of exclusionary social boundaries, and that this social liberalization results in greater economic prosperity for the lower, middle and upper classes alike. Hypothesis derived from this principle of free exchange are tested using original survey data from two different counties in the United States: Miami-Dade County, FL and Allegheny County, PA.
