A growing body of research highlights the link between childhood social environments and adult health status. For example, researchers have found that a variety of early life conditions and experiences, such as childhood socioeconomic position, early parental loss, and exposure to childhood trauma, predict health and well-being during adulthood. The current study uses a nationally representative sample of adults aged 25–74 to examine the long-term health effects of one aspect of the childhood social environment that has received relatively little attention: receiving emotional support from parents.

The findings from this research show that adults who received ample parental support during childhood have fewer depressive symptoms, fewer serious and chronic conditions, and better self-rated health than adults who received less parental support while growing up. Personal control, self-esteem, and social relationships during adulthood account for a large portion of these long-term effects. These relationships persist with increasing age and across socioeconomic strata and race/ethnicity. The long-term health effects of early parental support, however, are gender specific. The health of women is affected most by maternal support received during childhood, while the health of men is affected most by paternal support received while growing up. These effects are mitigated to a moderate degree by educational attainment in adulthood.

Taken together, these findings indicate that early parental support is an important resource for attaining optimal mental and physical health over the life course. These findings provide support for the importance of taking a life course perspective in understanding the social determinants of health among adults and designing interventions aimed at reducing adulthood morbidity.
