Although the Vietnam War and television news coverage became inseparable in public memory, the weekly newsmagazines played a crucial role conveying information on the war to millions of Americans during the period of formal military intervention. Newsweek, Time, and U.S. News & World Report blended commentary with reportage, creating a unique journalistic hybrid to deliver opinionative judgments on American military methods and policy.

Competitive factors caused each newsmagazine to offer a distinct viewpoint on the conduct of the war and the overall situation in Vietnam, especially during the 1965–1967 buildup phase. Newsweek presented critical and skeptical commentary on military methods, and informed readers about the awful toll on Vietnamese civilians who fell victim to American firepower. Time accepted the premise that American warfare technology would win the war. U.S. News argued for unrestricted warfare rather than the strategy of limited war. By summer 1967, however, all three newsmagazines concurred the war had reached a stalemate and might not be won—a collective judgment expressed several months before the Vietcong offensive of Tet 1968 presumably persuaded the news media and the public that military intervention in Vietnam could not accomplish its purpose. Newsweek continued to be the most persistent critic and skeptic about the war's conduct from 1968 onward, while Time adopted an increasingly critical tone toward presidential policy decisions, especially during the last year of the war.
