How therapists come to know what they know is not a subject that is widely discussed in psychology training programs. Therapists are trained to understand and diagnose their clients using certain theoretical paradigms, yet are rarely encouraged to take a hard look at how these paradigms are both created by—and in turn create—cultural context. It is important for therapists to develop a questioning stance with regard to how they make meaning.

This study is theoretical in nature; its purpose is to explore the question of how therapists come to make the knowledge claims they do. This undertaking is important because such knowledge claims impact the client/therapist relationship, and color clients' own meaning-making. The study first looks at the historical context of the emergence of the “talking cure.” It then turns to an exploration of the parallels between psychological theory and cultural context. This examination will reveal the co-constructing nature of the relationship between psychotherapy and cultural context. Additionally, it will show how therapist knowledge claims change over time in response to sociocultural shifts.

Next, the study focuses on the intersection of therapist knowledge, power and culture. The issue of Satanic Ritual Abuse has been chosen to illustrate a cultural phenomenon that raises important questions with respect to therapist knowledge claims and practices. The example of Satanic Ritual Abuse serves as a starting point from which to explicate the relationships among knowledge, power and culture; and the effect power relations have on the development of a therapy client's narrative.
