Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 2002.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between differentiation of self and individuation—two concepts that were originally defined as distinct, yet currently used interchangeably in the professional literature. The study was also geared to examine the relationship of these two concepts, which serve as indicators of mental health, to a similarly defined concept of psychopathology, narcissism. The data were provided by participants (N = 148) who were both randomly selected and recruited. The research questions, which were parceled into two different hypotheses, were addressed through correlational and confirmatory factor analyses. The results of the study, though far from conclusive, seem to suggest that differentiation of self and individuation have far more in common operationally than the conceptual literature suggests they should. In addition, the results show that only individuation, as primarily represented by the Separation Individuation Process Inventory, may be capable of readily distinguishing itself from narcissism. A discussion concerning the results, limitations of the study, and implications for future research and clinical practice are also put forth.
