Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2002.
This study attempted to expand the qualitative research on supported housing for persons with serious mental illness. The emphasis was on interviewing a sampling of individuals with serious mental illness who have spent some years in residential settings, and who have successfully transitioned to independent living through supported housing programs. Literature review indicates some controversy about what supported housing is, and should be, especially in the important area of choice for the consumer of mental health services. The reality of many programs of transition from residential settings is that they continue to maintain many characteristics of residential treatment, and only minimally allow consumer choice in housing, especially. The research done in this study attempted to determine which supports most benefit people with mental illness who transition to supported housing from the perspective of the experts in the field. That is, individuals who are living successfully independently in the community. Hopefully the findings of this research will provide concrete information useful to both service providers and consumers in the search for the balance between the empowerment of personal choice for independent living and support identified as necessary by the consumer.
