Body image is a central concern for adolescent girls growing up in our society. How these teens come to experience their physical selves throughout adolescence is a significant factor in their sense of self and, if considerable disturbance in body image exists, these girls may be at risk for an eating disorder. Substantial quantitative research literature exists which offers an understanding of the factors contributing to dysfunctional body image, yet little is known about body image as a developmental process. Additionally, self-efficacy has more recently been considered as a factor associated with body image. However, the few studies examining the body image-self-efficacy connection have been quantitative and have taken only a first step exploring the relationship.

This qualitative study explored, retrospectively, the body image experience of young women during their adolescence, aiming to understand the dynamic interplay of factors such as media influences, relationships, and most significantly, aspects of self-efficacy. In-depth interviews were conducted with 16 young women between the ages of 19 and 22 who had never been diagnosed with an eating disorder.

The findings from this study are summarized as follows: (a) All the young women interviewed experienced a sense of self-efficacy during their adolescence; social and physical self-efficacy were notably connected to body image development while academic self-efficacy was not. (b) Personal efficacy, expressed by these participants as feelings of control, was evident when addressing issues of weight, diet and exercise. (c) Weight change, with emphasis on gaining and on the “Freshman 15,” had a significant impact on the body image of most of the participants. (d) Support was found for much of the existing research which addressed the impact of feedback and teasing, influences of family dynamics and mother's body image, and the consequences of comparisons to peers and the thin ideal presented in media. (e) Lack of awareness about physical changes emerged as an issue and had considerable impact on feelings of self-efficacy and developing body image.
