Thesis (M.A.)--Prescott College, 1999.
The purpose of this study was to examine ways in which sport psychology in general and specifically Psychological Skills Training (PST) could be applied to athletic participation, in order to enhance self-esteem among adolescent females. This study summarizes the need for raising self-esteem, athletic participation's effect on self-esteem, and gender specific issues and motivations. A rationale is presented for the importance of self-esteem enhancement strategies as a component in female high school athletics.

The research examined the effect of PST on the self-esteem of the members of a high school girls' golf team. The Self-Esteem Inventory, authored by Brown and Alexander (1991) assessed the changes in self-esteem of the experimental and control groups, both before and after the eleven week PST intervention. Statistical analysis found that there was a greater increase in athletes' self-esteem after receiving PST, however the difference was not statistically significant.
