Thesis (M.S.)--Mississippi State University, 1998.
To explore the effects of moment of inertia on the swing speed of baseball and softball bats, production baseball and softball bats were constructed to produce a weight change or a unit difference. A measurement system of lasers and sensors was arranged so that speed measurements could be taken as the bat moved across the plate. The sensors were connected to a data acquisition system and oscilloscope so that the data points of each swing could be saved. Baseball and softball players hit balls set on a tee and thrown from a pitching machine with the constructed bats. A large change in velocity for swing speeds of players hitting pitched balls appeared as the moment of inertia increased. A smaller change in velocity appeared when players were hitting balls off of a tee. The theoretical description was developed and gave reasonable results.
