This research represents a hermeneutical analysis of the need for adult educators in business-oriented settings to reflect, inquire, and engage in dialogue regarding the diverse and incommensurable moral perspectives and rationalities among them. Ethical coherence is generally assumed, but multiple moral perspectives make such assumptions problematic.

This research represents a hermeneutical analysis of the need for adult educators in business-oriented settings to reflect, inquire, and engage in dialogue regarding the diverse and incommensurable moral perspectives and rationalities among them. The main purpose of this study is to raise awareness among adult educators in business-oriented organizational settings to this lack of ethical coherence by conducting a hermeneutical analysis of three organizational learning texts that are widely recognized in the field. These include Organizational Learning II by Chris Argyris and Donald Schön, The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge, and Sculpting the Learning Organization by Karen Watkins and Victoria Marsick. The moral perspectives of these authors is examined in light of the primary works of moral philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre who has written extensively on the issues of moral philosophy in the context of twentieth century Western culture. The analysis indicates that pragmatic and utilitarian moral assumptions reflective of modern liberal individualism are embedded in all three texts, but that the texts explicitly address ethical concerns of an instrumental nature.

A primary aim is to challenge adult educators to examine, clarify, and articulate their basic ethical assumptions and encourage the inclusion of intrinsic ethical considerations as a central component of the curricula and instructional design of adult education programs.
