Land use conflicts are common phenomena in Chinese nature reserves owing to population pressure. Two-thirds of Tianmushan Nature Reserve in Zhejiang Province is community land. There is a full range of conflicts in this nature reserve, from illicit logging and poaching to unauthorised cultivation. How these conflicts may be resolved without compromising either the goal of biodiversity conservation or the interests of local peasants is a significant challenge.

520 $a Directed by the Salafsky's Conceptual Framework of General Conservation Project, supported by detailed interviews conducted in summer 2001, this case study analysed multilateral relationships among the conservation agency, nearby communities and local governments, examined the conservation system and its policies, found out the real sources of land use conflicts, and then subsequently employed international expertise and local knowledge to formulate a set of recommendations for the resolution of conflicts. A revised conceptual framework was established specifically for the study of land use conflict resolution.
