One component of the prodigious floral diversity of tropical lowland rain forest communities is the occurrence of series of closely related species that grow in sympatry. Three major hypotheses have been forwarded to describe these complexes, here summarized as a set of competing hypotheses: (I) Such series are better described as polymorphic assemblages. (II) Such series are comprised of discrete entities, or species. (A) These species, when sympatric, have not diverged in their niche characteristics. Proposed as a common phenomenon in tropical rain forests, Hypothesis IIA stands in conflict with the Competitive Exclusion Principle of Gause, widely held to be a major organizing force in temperate communities. A review of the theoretical issues and empirical data concerning these series in the humid tropics leads to the conclusions that (i) small, monophyletic groups are the most appropriate objects of investigation when examining the existence of closely related, sympatric species, and (ii) most previous studies of such series have neglected to demonstrate the monophyletic relationships of the members, giving rise to the possibility of inaccurate conclusions. I have employed several lines of investigation to test which of these three hypotheses best applies to the Polyalthia hypoleuca (Annonaceae) complex of Malesia. After demonstrating the monophyly of this complex, character data taken from relevant herbarium specimens were used in several multivariate statistical analyses. These analyses revealed six distinct morphological species. Field investigations clearly demonstrate that different combinations of these species regularly occur in sympatry throughout the forests of Malesia, and that sympatric species always exhibited some combination of differences in height at maturity; soil conditions tolerance; timing of flowering; floral odors and pollinators; seed germination requirements; seedling water relations ecology; and seedling response to drought and flooding. Thus, the ecological patterns found among the members of the P. hypoleuca complex are consistent with Hypothesis IIB. This study demonstrates the need for parallel studies from other monophyletic groups for a more complete understanding of the origin and maintenance of diversity in lowland tropical rain forests.
