The Chinese people have been coming to the United States in significant numbers ever since 1849. Throughout these years, they have developed from a homogeneous group to a heterogeneous community. The most widely spoken languages that these Chinese employ are Mandarin, Cantonese, Taiwanese and English. Culturally and socially, there are tensions between the American-born Chinese (ABC) and the Overseas-born-Chinese (OBC), between Hong Kong Chinese and Mainland Chinese, between Taiwanese-speaking Chinese and Mandarin-speaking Chinese. Economically, this diverse and divided population is polarired between the affluent professional and business people and the minimum wage workers.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The first Chinese church in the United States was formed by the Presbyterians in San Francisco in 1853. Since then, the Chinese Church in this country has enjoyed continuous growth, mainly because of historical, geographical and institutional factors. Historical factors include political situations in East and Southeast Asia, and the changes that have taken place in the US immigration policy. Geographical factors include both contextual and environmental conditions. Institutional factors include conviction and motivation, strategy and methods, structure and organization, as well as leadership and resources.

In order to accommodate different language groups, the Chinese Church in the USA undertook ministries in other languages besides Cantonese and English ever since the late 1940s. Para-church organizations have also been formed to help in special ministries since the late 1950s. Throughout these years, the Chinese Church has experienced the reality and the necessity of both cultural and structural pluralism for its expansion.

However, a number of Chinese sub-groups, such as the Vietnamese-Chinese, mainland Chinese immigrants and blue collar workers, have apparently been neglected. Looking ahead, the Chinese population in the United States will continue to increase and the Chinese community will doubtless continue its present diversity. If the Chinese Church is serious about leading the over ninety percent unchurched Chinese to Christ, it needs to adopt diversified expansion strategies. Each congregation is encouraged to accept responsibility for an unreached ethnic Chinese people group as its target and plan effective ministries to reach it for Christ.
