Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 1995.
The aim of this dissertation is to examine an emerging phenomenon that is of growing importance in Taiwan: the expansion of private corporations. Within the past four decades, industrialization in Taiwan has developed to a height of not only large scale manufacturing firms but also of the corresponding economic organizations which encompass these complicated economic activities. While there are quite a few number of impressive scholarly works that approach the so-called "Taiwan miracle" from historical (Ho, 1978; Lin, 1973), classical economics (Fei, ranis & Kuo, 1979; Liang, 1988), or political economics' (Amsden, 1989; Gold, 1986; Cummings, 1987; Chu, 1989) perspectives, there is still but a handful of research concerning the complex social organizations of such a newly and rapidly developed market economy. The rapid expansion of private corporations in Taiwan displays intriguing characteristics which deserves further research attention.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The subject of this project is the growth and development of large-scale private enterprises in their cultural context as well as historical process. The focus of study is the business groups (Jituan) in Taiwan. Among them, Formosa Plastics Group is the principal case of most of the first-hand research materials collected.

Among the many factors that influence the pattern of corporate expansion in Taiwan, this dissertation research selected and explored four important ones: historical legacy (Chapter Three), the state (Chapter Four), the family (Chapter Five), and finally the network (Chapter Six). Theses are four independent variables which interact with the seemingly leading factors such as the quest for efficiency, for reducing transaction cost, and for total reliance on state leadership. As this dissertation unfolds in the following chapters, I will show that in addition to the obvious goals provided by the contemporary theoretical models in interpreting the process of social and institutional changes (i.e., learning to be modernized in institutional transformation, to be more efficient in economic process, and to be more effective in national development), the above four variables also have profound impacts on the final product of Taiwanese corporate expansion. The historical past in Taiwan's economic scene created a distinct market structure which was to become the fertile ground for the business groups to develop. The state created the opportunity for the Jituans to grow in size. The emphasis on family ties in Chinese society influenced the Jituan's institutional form. Lastly, the networking nature of Chinese in their social lives provides ample external opportunities for the Jituan to expand beyond their immediate environment.
