Most sociological literature treats the individual as a passive subject, constrained by social structure, rather than as an active subject who can shape or change the constraining situation through his actions (Gidden, 1984). This thesis takes a different standpoint: union workers and leaders are perceived as active subjects who design and implement their behavioral strategies in an active but sometimes unconscious manner. Thus, the thesis describes and analyzes the interplay between a group of union leaders and the social-political and industrial-organizational contexts they were embedded in.

The China Times Industrial Union which was established in September 1988, is the focus of this study. How did a small group of union leaders experience their union participation process when they had to engage in a series of collective oppositional activities and then were beaten by their management? In light of the case data, the following main themes were developed through the case story. First, within the context of CTIU's unionization, the union leaders' actions were both contextually bounded and contextually redefined. The existing patterns of social relationships and the attached meanings could be reframed and challenged when they engaged in the collective unionizing actions. Second, concerning the inhibition or liberation of an inquiring stance toward human action in the field of social practice, this thesis identified the conflicts these union actors designed and implemented which functioned as transitional forms. Third, during the process of unionization, their fears of political repression became entangled with their anxieties about running their union; while then faced the uncertainty of an unknown future, their entangled fears not only limited their capacity to participate actively in the union business but also inhibited their learning and social inquiry.

This thesis does not try to provide any predictable assumptions about Taiwan's autonomous union movement, nor does it try to synthesize the strengths or weaknesses of the union leadership. For the most part, this study is a narrative account, a story-telling.
