Archaeological studies of historic sites located in North America have yet to produce any major contributions to general anthropological or historical knowledge, at least as acknowledged outside the field of historical archaeology. Recently, a new approach, referred to as "historical ethnography," has emerged which may remedy this situation. The historic ethnographic approach entails the in-depth study of a specific historic context using all data available to produce a descriptive and interpretive synthesis.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Pierce, Idaho, a gold placer mining community in north-central Idaho, was selected as a case study to evaluate the value of the historic ethnographic approach. Pierce was selected for study because of the wealth of archaeological and documentary data available that pertain to the overseas Chinese who lived and worked in the locality from the mid-1860s into the early twentieth century. Such a study was needed because previous studies of the Chinese in America have concentrated on urban settings, with little consideration given to the majority of the population, who lived in rural, work-oriented communities such as Pierce.
520 $a By holistically examining the social unit of the community, the historic ethnographic approach made it possible to integrate archaeological, documentary, and oral historical data within a functional and economic perspective to produce the Pierce historic ethnography. The study suggests that (1) the economic organization of the Chinese in rural settings was more entrepreneurially based than previously thought, (2) the Chinese contributed significantly to the Euroamerican economy in Pierce, and (3) inter-ethnic relationships were more cooperative than have been typically described for nineteenth-century western communities.
520 $a The concept of historic ethnography was found to be a productive method for the archaeological study of a historic community largely because it facilitates the integration of different types of data; by using this method, one can avoid the archaeological/documentary dichotomy that is so prevalent in historical archaeology today. The Pierce ethnography is offered as a model for other researchers to evaluate and refine as they produce historic ethnographies from other contexts. As historic ethnographies from different contexts are produced, comparative studies, or historic ethnology, will begin and should produce results that are significant to disciplines such as geography, history, and sociology.
