520 $a This study is based on existing data collected in Shanghai in 1983 by Liu et al. in collaboration with the Shanghai Institute of Mental Health. The data were obtained from 88 mentally abnormal cases and 225 controls as a follow up study of a psychiatric epidemiological survey of 3,108 randomly selected subjects in one of the ten administrative districts in Shanghai.
520 $a The purpose of this thesis is to discover social and cultural factors of mental distress and support system in contemporary China. Social and cultural factors proposed and tested in this study include: the concept of the self, patterns of the locus of control, the change of family living patterns and family relationship, political controls, changes in interpersonal relationships, and cohort effects. Results from data analysis are: (1) as an important factor related to mental health suggested by Western theory, the process of the concept of the self is different among Chinese as compared with Westerners; (2) both dominant patterns of the locus of control and its influence on mental health differ between Chinese and Westerners; (3) as a result of influence from the macro social system there have been considerable changes in family living patterns, family and other interpersonal relationships in contemporary China. These changes have had an important impact on mental health via their influence on individual support networks; (4) political control is an important source of stress in contemporary China. However, there are both positive and negative effects of political leadership on people's mental health; (5) there are cohort effects on individual social status stemming from historical events and periods in China which introduced cohort related vulnerability factors to mental health.
