520 $a Chinese churches in North America after one hundred years history are presently being challenged by the evangelistic needs and cultural problems occasioned by new quotas permitting 50,000 immigrants yearly. The 647 Chinese churches and 190 para-church student Bible study groups need help in dealing with current obstacles to evangelism. These include the heterogeneous cultural patterns, "westernization" problems, American-born Chinese (ABC) and Overseas Chinese (OBC) tensions, social polarizations, plus opposing religious and ethical practices. Of the one million Chinese population only 6.4 percent are Christian.
520 $a The author's thirty-one years of missionary, evangelistic and pastoral ministry in Chinese churches in the Orient and America sensitized him to help meet this need by developing "A Manual for a Culturally Related Evangelism Program for Chinese Churches in North America." This is a training manual for practical and effective evangelism. Pastors will find it a ready source of biblically based evangelistic know how. His experience was corroborated and matured by interviewing Chinese pastors, studying Chinese publications and library research.
520 $a The first part of the thesis develops the biblical beliefs and doctrines for evangelistic work. It reviews the historical and present evangelistic ministries of the Chinese churches. Chinese cultural, ethical, social and religious obstacles to evangelism are studied including ancestor worship. Spiritual principles and evangelistic work guidelines are given to promote a fervent outreach ministry.

Beginning with background materials researched in Part One, the Manual goes on to develop effective methods and models for introducing and presenting the gospel to Chinese living in North America. The pastor's personal example as an evangelist is the key to enlisting lay involvement. Detailed follow-up plans for new converts are outlined. Methods for training responsible workers are described. The exigency of life-style evangelism is advocated, as is the blending of evangelism and social responsibility.
