The overseas Chinese live in almost all parts of the world. Some of them live in the more developed countries, others live in the less developed countries. In most countries and areas, the overseas Chinese are in the minority, but in some they are in the majority. The distribution of the overseas Chinese is widespread but uneven. More than 90 percent of the overseas Chinese live in Asia, particularly in the Southeast Asian regions. Among the overseas Chinese who live outside Asia, about 80 percent are concentrated in the more developed countries.

The growth patterns of overseas Chinese now appear to be more affected by fertility than by international migration and mortality. The available data demonstrate that, generally speaking, the overseas Chinese had a higher fertility rate in the earlier decades, but are now experiencing a fertility transition. Multiple factors influence their fertility patterns and variation in different societies.

There are now over thirty million overseas Chinese in the world. The overseas Chinese have important influences in many host countries and are not an inconsequential population. Both practical and theoretical implications of the research are discussed.
