Without a proper understanding of itself, the church cannot correctly comprehend its God-given mission. The result is inadequate definition of the ministry, ineffective evangelization and disoriented theological education. This is true particularly with the contemporary Chinese context. Christianity in China has long been regarded as an unwelcome foreign religion since the nineteenth century. The Three-Self Patriotic Movement was originally a reactionary program, initiated by the communist government in the early 1950s, to disconnect the relationship between Christians and churches in China and those in overseas. However, it also created both disunity and distrust among Chinese Christians until today. Since the opening up of China for economic reform in 1979, Protestant churches experience both revival and problems and church leaders are eager to seek theological insights so that the church may face the challenges responsibly and faithfully.

Luther's ecclesiology is biblical, Christocentric and evangelical. It is capable to draw audience from all theological stances, capable of uniting, and offers a rigid yet dynamic principle for Christians to understand what the church and its mission really is. Thus, it can enable effective and faithful Christian witness in the contemporary Chinese context. Luther's understanding of the church as the believing people of God, as the priesthood of all believers, and as the communion of saints, emphasizes on the Word of God as the origin and life, basis and criterion of the church. It insists on loyalty to God alone and seeks to dethrone idols and demythologize the other gospels. It upholds the church's priestly function to pray for the forgiveness of sins of the entire society and to seek for the reconciliation between God and the world and among people. It emphasizes on holiness and thus upholds morality and service and cherishes servanthood “for others.” It stresses mutual respect and recognition, sharing and co-operation, and visible unity of all kinds. It especially takes the pains and sufferings of the poor and the exploited seriously and thus in solidarity supports the government in its effort in fighting for their justice in peace and love. Luther's ecclesiology is defensibly relevant for the Chinese context.
