It is commonly held that well documented cultural characteristics of Chinese strongly influence behavior of ethnic Chinese living "overseas." A considerable body of literature supports this position. However, very little research utilizes the investigative tools of anthropology. It is even less common to find work done by high school teachers using those tools to study elements of the school culture. This paper examines Taiwanese/Chinese students in an American public high school, using the tools of anthropology, conducted by a teacher participant/observer. A model of expected Chinese/Taiwanese behavior was developed and Taiwanese students were compared to it. The results were consistent with the hypothesis which holds that student behavior will differ from that of the model.Subjects--Topical Terms:
