Thesis (M.A.)--Eastern Michigan University, 1991.
In this thesis, we present a time-series analysis of the relationships between socioeconomic development, family planning, and fertility transition in China during the 40 years from 1945 to 1985. Time-series data from two typical areas in China, Shanghai as a developed area and Shaanxi as an underdeveloped area, were examined to explore the variability in the fertility patterns of China's subregions due to the considerable variation in socioeconomic development. The auto-regressive and analysis-of-covariance models were employed in statistical analysis of the survey data. The results of this study indicate that (1) socioeconomic development is the basic factor for fertility decline in developed urban area like Shanghai, (2) the forced government family planning policy as intervention is the basic factor related to fertility decline in under-developed areas like Shaanxi, (3) there is not always a positive relationship between family planning policy and fertility decline. When socioeconomic development is low, the implementation of forceful family planning programs has only limited impact on fertility.Subjects--Topical Terms:
