Zhou, Wei.
AIDS knowledge, risk perception and behaviors among female migrant sex workers in Shenzhen, China.
- 57 p.
Adviser: Shawky Karas.
Thesis (M.S.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2001.
This thesis reports the findings from an UNDP-funded study on HIV/STD knowledge, AIDS risk perception, risk and protective behaviors among 366 female migrant workers providing sex-related services in Shenzhen, China. While sex related HIV/AIDS risk was high, perception of HIV/AIDS risk was uniformly low-to-no across age, education and work type or location. The amount of knowledge about HIV/AIDS was positively related to age, education, the amount of knowledge about other STDs and risk reduction, but not to HIV/AIDS risk perception. Women with more knowledge about HIV/AIDS and condoms were more likely to use condoms consistently. The implications, including more creative and targeted education, better condom distribution, and joint efforts with Hong Kong, are discussed.
