It is now widely acknowledged that product variety is an important source of competitive advantage for firms in many industries. If not managed carefully, however, product variety may not be profitable to a firm due to the proliferation of components, subassemblies and suppliers resulting from it. In this dissertation, we present models and methodologies for family-based development of products. By developing products as a family, a firm can take advantage of the potential commonalities among products, and reduce its cost of offering variety.

The first chapter overviews the problems addressed in the dissertation, and provides a summary of major results. In the second chapter, we present a product design approach for integrated component and supplier selection that (a) leverages the synergies among products in a family, (b) considers component and supplier selection decisions jointly to minimize the sum of design, procurement, and usage costs, and (c) helps identify components that can potentially constitute the product family platform. Application of the model and the managerial framework to an industrial problem are discussed.

Platforms are shared subsystems that can help increase development leverage. Most of the existing literature considers only the benefits of using platforms and ignores the costs associated with them. The development cost of a platform is high which must be balanced against its benefits in order to minimize the total cost of developing a product family. In chapter 3, we model costs and benefits of the platform approach to characterize its domain of appropriateness.

In the fourth chapter, we show that careful design of the assembly sequence of a product helps create generic subassemblies that reduce the proliferation of subassemblies. The approach of designing the assembly sequence to maximize the benefit from commonality of components and assembly operations is referred to as product-family based assembly sequence design. We formalize the notion of generic subassemblies, and introduce two properties called coverage and common component count. It is shown that maximizing coverage of the generic subassembly maximizes the savings in safety stock due to assembly sequence design. This result forms the basis of an algorithmic approach to identify generic subassemblies. The algorithm provides insights to designers on which components to commonize and which precedence constraints to relax for increasing the size of the generic subassembly. A theoretical contribution here is the mapping of this problem to a classic problem in graph theory of identifying the Steiner path. We illustrate the algorithm with an assembly from industry, and provide computational test results of the complexity and benefits of product family-based assembly sequence design.

In summary, product family-based development expands the domain of product development methods from individual products to a family of products. In an age of increasing variety, when companies are looking for ways to offer product variants in a cost-effective manner, product family-based approach adds value by reducing component, subassembly and supplier proliferation, and by reducing product variety costs.
