The dissertation is an attempt to present the Blackfoot ways of knowing. It identifies the basic responsibilities of Niitsitapi—the Real People which constitute their identity. The study has a two fold objective: (1) to present the basic ontological responsibilities which form the epistemological and pedagogical principles of Real People; (2) to identify a process for decolonization and reconstructing the Niitsitapi ways of coming to knowing. I present the issues of colonization and deconstructing the colonized mind as the educational challenges for Indigenous peoples. I argue that science, knowledge and truth are culturally bound constructs; subsequently, their origin is in the ontological theories of specific cultures. Based on the words of Niitsitapi grandparents, I articulate and present basic principles and methods for the development of the foundations for Niitsitapi education.

The research is exploratory in nature and used an experiential research method. I used open ended questionnaires with a convocation of five grandparents from the Blood tribe. Other traditional community approaches that were used include: the guidance (as spiritual advisor) of a grandfather for the duration of the dissertation, a number of convocations with ceremonialists and grandparents; personal participation in Niitsitapi ceremonies; participation in the Traditional Knowledge and Recovery of the Indigenous Mind learning community; and finally, to visit sacred places in the United States and Mexico. The research process was a journey of connecting and participating with my tribal ancestors and relatives. The text of the dissertation cannot completely capture the holistic nature of the understanding that I have gained of my own tribal alliances.

The Blackfoot Ways of Knowing first begin with “self”. The researcher is participating in and experiencing niipaitapiiyssini—the ways of the Real people and this participation is delineated by an epistemology, a research methodology, and a pedagogy. Niitsitapi ways of knowing are the concerted and collective responsibility of the people. Knowledge is gained through experience that is constituted through the principles and protocols of the tribal alliances of Niitsitapi Participating and experiencing within this network of alliances is the transformational educational forum of Niitsitapi.
