While most of western New Spain had been brought under Spanish control by the early seventeenth century, the Sierra del Nayar was not occupied militarily by Spaniards until 1722. Franciscan missions, military garrisons and Spanish towns were established around the perimeter of the Sierra; and for well over a century, Coras traded and had other contacts with Europeans and indigenous peoples in the greater region. In addition, the Sierra became a refuge for fugtives from the colonial order, including indigenous refugees from the frontier wars and the missions, runaway African and mulatto slaves, and Spanish outlaws. Thanks to these cross-cultural encounters, Coras educated themselves about the Spanish colonial order, and chose to incorpropriate elements of Spanish culture many years prior to losing political control of the Sierra.

With the Spaniards' 1722 military victory at the central plateau which they called La Mesa del Tonati, it was claimed at the time that the Coras had been conquered. Jesuit missionaries were sent in immediately to institute their program of conversion and civilization; they worked among the Sierra Coras until their expulsion in 1767. Franciscan friars followed in their footsteps, and were active in the Sierra until shortly after Mexican Independence in the nineteenth century. Evidence indicates that conquest and conversion of the Coras was uneven at best.

The analyses and conclusions drawn here are informed by colonial period missionary, military and administrative documents; earlier crónicas or histories of Nayarit and western New Spain generally; and twentieth century ethnographies of the Sierra Coras. Together these sources bring to light certain aspects of continuity and change in Cora history; and suggest that many contemporary Cora traditions have their roots in the colonial period, or earlier. Throughout their history, even as social and political contexts have shifted the Coras of the Sierra del Nayar have steadfastly defended their land and their way of life; this dissertation narrates one part of that story.
