Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northeastern University, 2002.
Stock market activity is a relatively new addition to everyday middle class life in the United States. This dissertation examines the ways in which Americans talk about the stock market. Based on qualitative interviews with stock traders in 1999 and 2000, this research discusses the functions of this discourse referred to as “stock talk.” It is suggested that this talk represents a “speech culture” which serves to minimize the tensions involved in speculating with limited monetary resources.
