The line-bisecting test, a neuropsychological and behavioral measure of cerebral laterality was administered to a sample of highly skilled right-handed athletes (N = 250; Edinburgh Handedness Inventory score of >59). This test revealed these athletes to be overwhelmingly (t statistic 8.9; d = 1.28; p < .000) left-cerebral hemisphere predominant on the basis of making more and greater magnitude rightward errors in line bisecting than a control group of non-athlete students (N = 60). The left-hemispheric predominance found in athletes was considered consistent with EEG studies of athletes and the Ideal Athlete's Profile showing left-activation during important phases prior to, during sport-specific tasks, and when learning new motor skills.

The interactive effects of repressive coping, extraversion, neuroticism, and absorption were also studied in the context of cerebral laterality in athletes and specific operationalizations of sport performance (batting average in baseball [males] and softball players [females]). Although multiple regression and tests for interactions among the above measures were not revealing, certain personality variables were independently significantly correlated with performance. Absorption and neuroticism were significantly negatively related to line-bisecting and performance in females, whereas repressive coping was significantly correlated with line-bisecting and performance in males. In addition, magnitude of line-bisecting error was significantly correlated with performance in males.

The data and findings on absorption and repressive coping demonstrated that 89% of all athletes were low to medium in absorption. Even though repressive coping did not differ between athletes and non-athletes, only 28% of athletes were low in this trait. High repressive coping, low neuroticism and absorption also comprised the most frequently observed combination of traits in this sample of athletes (N = 699).

While most of the findings on relationships among personality, performance and cerebral laterality were of a small effect size it was argued that effect size may have been underestimated due to physical, technical, and situational factors. However, because an analysis of confidence intervals revealed that some correlation coefficients appeared unstable it was cautioned that alternative interpretations for some of the data needed to be considered.
