Working at the crossroads of literary studies and history, this dissertation reconstellates the long ignored literary production of the years between 1865 and 1886 as a significant body of work. The novels, essays, and poems of this period reveal that the battles of Reconstruction were fought as much on the literary terrain of the editor's desk, the author's page, and the actor's stage as in the courthouse, the meeting hall, and the state legislature. As the first study of postwar literature seen through the lens of the five occupied districts created by the Military Reconstruction Act of 1867, this project assesses the effects of a politically imposed, temporally boundaried regionalism on shaping the alternative visions of Reconstruction articulated by writers living within those districts. A response to federal occupation, Reconstruction narratives were a vehicle by which the South could reclaim a regional authority.

Most significantly, Reconstruction writers attempted to renegotiate the propertied traditions of republicanism, on behalf of the identity of citizenship for freedpeople. Writing at a time when the meaning of property expanded to include intangible objects such as rights and interests, the authors I consider sought to make available this new property to freedpeople as a means by which they could become citizens without necessarily buying land—the traditional route to citizenship. As hopes for land ownership dimmed, the plot machinations and characters of Reconstruction narratives increasingly offered a model of economic citizenship endorsed by the image of freedpeople as empowered consumers. This project thus focuses on four key terms—labor, duty, property, and reputation—which predominated the discourse of citizenship in which Reconstruction narratives participated. Crafting engaging scenarios from political imperatives, Reconstruction writers dared to imagine a broader, more egalitarian polity for the postwar nation.

The persuasive appeal of radical visions was qualified, however, by the pressures of literary editors and the tastes of northern readers, which helped fuel a conservative backlash and the New South. This study contributes to understanding literature's place in clearing the forked path of Reconstruction, which headed toward the flowering of 1880s regionalism yet also led to the late century's racial divide.
