Narratives in restoration ecology: A qualitative exploration of multi-disciplinary perspectives.
- 297 p.
Major Professor: Robin E. Hoffmann.
Thesis (M.S.)--State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, 2001.
A review of the literature revealed that professionals from various disciplines are entering the emerging field of restoration ecology and encountering numerous theoretical and ethical questions. This study employed qualitative research methods to explore narratives told by restoration ecologists from the science and design disciplines. It was discovered that most restorationists shared a common definition of the field as an attempt to return past ecological conditions. However, the agreement and certainty found in definitions gave way to complex issues and subjective decisions in practice. In practice, societal needs gained the attention of restorationists and interviewees indicated that they experienced both positive and negative emotions about their work. Finally, restorationists appear to wrestle with several structural aspects in creating restoration narratives. For example, where should restoration narratives begin and who should author these stories? The implications of these issues, and potential action steps to address each issue are discussed.
