Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 2002.
This research project explores the qualities of leadership that facilitate racialized minority inclusion in Canadian organizations and institutions. The existing literature on leadership reveals that there is a lack of research on leadership from a racially and culturally inclusive perspective. Yet Canada is a multiracial and multicultural society that needs inclusive leadership to build sustainable communities and workplaces. Collectively, the stories of the research participants show that racism is the main barrier to minority inclusion and that it takes effective leadership in advocacy and support to eliminate racism. Such a leadership is humble, collaborative, sharing, caring, selfless and sacrificial; it is not about individualistic competencies and competitiveness. This leadership goes beyond conventional leadership competencies to put substance into Canada's multiculturalism, employment equity, human rights, and anti-racism education. The stories of the research participants confirm the initial hunch of the project that leadership that is effective in advocating and supporting racialized minority inclusion exists in Canada awaiting to be documented, acknowledged, honored, shared and expanded.
