A method is presented to account for the microstructure of flowing polymeric liquids by introducing the conformation tensor (expectation of molecular stretch and orientation), and the entanglement density. The method ensures that the microstructural model obeys the laws of thermodynamics; when applied to non-entangled polymeric liquids, it reproduces the results of Grmela and Carreau (1987), Beris and Edwards (1994), and Jongschaap, de Haas and Damen (1994).

A computational method is presented for analyzing free surface flows of polymer solutions with the conformation tensor. It combines methods of computing Newtonian free surface flows (Christodoulou 1990) and viscoelastic flows (Rajagopalan, Armstrong and Brown 1990, Guénette and Fortin 1995). Modifications are introduced to compute a traceless velocity gradient, and to include traction boundary conditions.

The free surface coating flow between a moving rigid boundary and a parallel static solid boundary from which a free surface detaches is analyzed with several models of dilute and semidilute polymer solutions. Although the boundary conditions at the static contact line introduce a singularity, this does not affect the computation of flows at high Weissenberg number when a recirculation is present. When the recirculation is absent, computations fail at moderate Weissenberg number because a conformation tensor eigenvalue is negative at the contact line.

The RFX (Fuller, Cathey, Hubbard and Zebrowski 1987) and QER (Mackay, Dajan, Wippel, Janeschitz-Kriegl and Lipp 1995) extensional rheometers are analyzed with integral balances of momentum and mechanical energy. The QER balance equation is corrected, and a new working equation is proposed. An explanation is found for the apparent Trouton ratio higher than three usually observed when testing Newtonian liquids at low extension rates in the RFX.

Fluorescently stained DNA molecules in dilute and entangled solutions are visualized in a roll-and-knife free surface flow. Dilute DNA stretches considerably at separation surfaces, and not much near the contact lines. The DNA unravels and orients easier in an entangled solution than in a dilute solution of equal zero-shear viscosity at the same shear rate and location in the flow. Experimental evidence suggests that the DNA may contract in the neutral direction of the velocity gradient in two-dimensional flows.
