Thesis (M.S.N.)--Gonzaga University, 2002.
This study examined the influence of direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA) on the provider/patient relationship and the prescribing practices of nurse practitioners. Understanding external influences on prescribing patterns helps to insure cost-effective and appropriate prescription writing. Thus far, only physicians have been consulted in the development of the federal Food and Drug Administrations (FDA) guidelines governing DTCA.

A descriptive online study demonstrated more similarities than differences regarding DTCA between family physicians, polled in a previous study, and nurse practitioners. Nurse practitioners were more favorable towards DTCA overall; this was attributed to opportunities for dialogue, promoting health, and including patients in the decision making process. Ninety-three percent of the nurse practitioner respondents had encountered patients asking about medications because of DTCA, but only twenty-eight percent of those patient encounters expected to receive a prescription. This suggests that patients first seek information, and answers, then medication if needed.
