Thesis (D.Min.)--University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, 2002.
As the classic production “The Wizard of Oz” reached its denouement, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion stood before the wizard in his emerald city palace. Their trek had taken them through Munchkin land and the enchanted forest. They had contended with the wicked witch and winged monkeys. At the end of their journey, the wizard conferred upon each of them what they so desperately sought. The Scarecrow got a brain. The Tin Man received a heart. The Cowardly Lion was endowed with courage. These gifts, however, were qualities that the three characters already demonstrated along their course to Oz. Wisdom, compassion, and courage were relegated to the subconscious. Through adversity and an artful wizard, the covert was made overt. Three imaginary individuals learned that they possessed powerful, untapped, inner resources.

It is to the beneficial potential of the inner self that this doctoral project will be devoted. The thesis to be explored and supported is the inner self, when creatively entered and engaged, yields positive possibilities for living. I posit that a thoughtful encounter with the interior self will produce treasures that will empower people to be more of what they can be, i.e. a conscious, aware, individuated, well-defined self. Such a self will have revitalizing implication for the faith community.
