Nichiren has been known as a votary of the Lotus Sutra and for his aggressive posture toward the government. However, his concern was not only with the leaders who govern Japan. He did not forget the people from the lower classes of society who were suffering, especially women. During the long history of Buddhism, women had been, in a sense, discriminated against. Most sutras illustrated that it was impossible for women to attain Buddhahood. However, citing the enlightenment of a dragon girl in the twelfth chapter of the Lotus Sutra, Nichiren advocated the theory of the attainment of Buddhahood by women. Throughout his life, Nichiren supported the idea of women attaining Buddahood and encouraged his women followers. In this paper, the focus will be on Nichiren's doctrine of the attainment of Buddhahood by women, and a discussion of the letters he wrote to his women followers will demonstrate how Nichiren encouraged his women followers.
