Robert Mapplethorpe's self-portraits.

Robert Mapplethorpe's self-portraits.
- 392 p.
Adviser: Ellen G. Landau.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Case Western Reserve University, 1999.
Referencing sources ranging from Rembrandt's revealing psychic histories, and Dürer's dialogues with the soul, to the tableaux of Neo-Classicist Jacques-Louis David and post-WW II fashion photography, Robert Mapplethorpe manipulated the self-portrait as an arena in which to publicly disclose personal revelations. Mapplethorpe articulated a unique vision, creating photographs that documented his keen awareness of American art and social dynamics during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Focusing on Mapplethorpe's conceptual, mixed media and photographic studies of himself created between 1969 and 1988, this dissertation demonstrates that one of the artist's most important contributions was in the genre of self-portraiture, an area often overlooked in consideration of Mapplethorpe's oeuvre.

Rejecting the notion that his self-portraits merely reflect a fundamental narcissism, this thesis addresses the intricacy of Mapplethorpe's emotional and psychological introspection, the integrity of the self-portraits as a whole, and the ramifications of an understanding of these works for issues germane to humanistic studies. Rather than declaring a singular overriding ideology to be the impetus for Mapplethorpe's production and reception, I develop interpretations that place the artist and his self-portraits in a wider cultural and art-historical context.

Exploring the ways in which Mapplethorpe resolved personal, aesthetic, and public contradictions and ambiguities by photographing himself, I focus intensely on selected images, applying a synthetic model incorporating interdisciplinary methodologies. Tools of investigation include formal analysis, the artist's personal and professional history, film theory, queer studies, theories addressing race and fetishism, psychoanalytic models ranging from Freud to Lacan, and critical approaches to social theory. Structuring a pluralistic investigation of the major concerns and themes that underlay Mapplethorpe's maturing aesthetic, in each chapter I demonstrate how the related symbolic and subliminal issues that Mapplethorpe tracked through his larger body of work are always introduced or summarized in the self-portraits.
