Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 2000.
This dissertation explores the ancient Christian Montanist sect, and uses the Montanists as a prototype for a discussion of ‘spiritual Christian’ sects throughout Church history. Extensive precedents to the Montanists are first examined, Jewish, pagan, and early Christian. Next, the beginnings of the Montanist movement, also called the ‘New Prophecy’, are discussed, paying special emphasis to the Montanists' Phrygian background and religio-cultural inheritance. Then, the spread of Montanism elsewhere is discussed, with primary emphasis on its real flowering in the North Africa of Tertullian, c. 200 A.D. After this, the full institutionalized development of third and fourth century Phrygian Montanism is examined. Next, the counterreactions and responses of the leaders of the Orthodox Church, to Montanism, are discussed and Montanism's key role as a major spur to several important developments in the mainstream church is explained and emphasized. Then, the history of the Montanists after the time of Constantine and the ultimate establishment of the Orthodox Church as the Christian-Roman state church is discussed, and the apparent destruction of Montanism, over the generations, due to active anti-‘heretic’ efforts on the part of the Roman State, is explained. After this, however, Church history is surveyed to show various examples of continued ‘Montanist’-like ‘spiritual Christian’ sects, groups, and leaders, right up to the present day. All of these, further, are contrasted with the paradigm of the sociological ‘church’, which seeks Christian universality, and the pluralistic ‘denomination’, which tends to be the ultimate descendant of many Montanist-like sects. Finally, in the last chapter, a significant analysis of the phenomenon of sectarianism, through the study of modern sociologists of religion who have studied this issue, is made, and Montanism is shown to fit into the paradigm of a Christian sect well.
