This study investigates the contribution of doctrinal controversy to the rise of the Christian bishop in the eastern Mediterranean during the fourth century A.D. By the rise of the bishop, I mean the expansion and consolidation of episcopal authority to an extent far beyond the expectations of patronage and the requirements of pastoral care. The phenomenon is usually attributed to the accumulation of the church's wealth and privileges after Constantine. Focusing instead on the actions leading to the buildup of the bishops' power, this study argues that the rise of the bishop must also be seen as the product of their response to the challenges posed by theological dispute.

First, I show how doctrinal disagreement could severely flu-eaten the legitimacy of the episcopal leadership, and yet, how, in practice, before the fourth century, that rarely happened. While authority remained diffuse or weak in the church, bishops tended to avoid conflict and to solve their differences through debate and compromise. With the Arian controversy, however, there was a subtle but fundamental shift in the way prelates responded to doctrinal disagreement. Polarization and confrontation replaced compromise. This shift was motivated by the strong commitment of church leaders to their views on the truth, but after Constantine, also by the perception that their positions—hence their control of congregations, resources, and people—had come to depend on their ability to convince others of their orthodoxy.

To achieve that, bishops engaged in practices and developed social strategies which led to the expansion and consolidation of their authority in church and society. The workings of these strategies are verified at two levels: in the bishops' relationship with the emperor as they tried to win his support or to resist him; and in the bishops' efforts to outdo rivals and consolidate their own positions on the local stage. The behavior resulting from the continued engagement in the dispute created conditions for bishops to enhance their authority and to carve a space for exercising their power. Both the doctrinal motivations and the actions resulting from them must be considered important, even causal, factors in the rise of the bishop.
