Despite the relatively long history of the electronic industry, its technological advances are still rapidly evolving as more and more sophisticated devices become available. The driving force of the consumer marked and its hunger for faster computers and communication devices resulted in the emergence the entire host of new high-frequency integrated circuits (ICs). Nowadays nobody is surprised by the computers whose processors operate at the clock speeds above 1GHz mark. In the consumer communication area the carrier frequencies already exceed 2GHz and continue to increase as more and more subscribers are seeking access to the wireless world.

The increasing demand for the high-speed integrated circuits results in the necessity for the development of new automated test equipment that is capable of testing these high-frequency circuits. This research deals with the design and performance evaluation of an ultrawideband high-frequency DC-coupled amplifier for use in the test equipment.

We will investigate the trade-offs involved in the development of the amplifier and explore all aspects of the circuit operation including small-signal analysis and large-signal performance evaluation. Models for the parasitic effects of the passive components and bonding wires will be presented and their effect on the amplifier behavior will be studied. Furthermore, analytical expressions for the estimation of the harmonic distortions in the amplifier will be compared with results of numerical predictions from custom and commercial software.
