Assessing total body fat percent (%BF) accurately is a primary focus of body composition researchers. Anthropometry (i.e., skinfolds and circumferences) is a commonly used field technique, which was developed and validated using hydrostatic weighing, now considered an outdated criterion method. The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of three professionally recommended anthropometric equations for women (18 to 55 years old) and then develop an updated prediction equation using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), a more accurate criterion measure. Women (N = 150) underwent standard anthropometric measures taken by the same investigator. Percent body fat by anthropometry was compared to DXA on the same day. Results indicated significant correlations (R = 0.896–0.929) (P < 0.01) but significant underestimations (range = 3.2–5.6%) (P < 0.01) of %BF compared to DXA. The following DXA criterion (DC) equation was created from a random validation group (N = 100) and was cross-validated on the remaining 50 subjects: %BF = −9.606 + 0.435(Σ3SF) − 0.001429(Σ3SF)<super>2</super> + 0.153(hip) + 0.07292(age); (Σ3SF = sum of triceps, suprailiac, thigh; hip = circumference in cm; age = years). Cross-validation results of the DC equation showed a high correlation (R = 0.934) with a low standard error (1.7%BF). The mean difference in %BF was only 0.2%BF. The DC equation was further cross-checked on a separate independent sample of women (N = 25) and again showed agreement with a mean difference of 0.2%BF (R = 0.953). These data suggest that the professionally recommended anthropometric equations for women underestimate %BF compared to the new gold standard (DXA) in body composition assessment. The DC equation appears to be a more accurate estimation of %BF in women aged 18 to 55 years old.
