The purpose of this study was to analyze Vereijken, Whiting, and Beek's (1992) approach to mathematically modeling slalom-like movements on a ski simulator and to determine if kinematic and kinetic measures supported the mathematical model. Novice male participants (
$n
=7$) performed 20 trials on 7 consecutive days. Kinematic data obtained via a PEAK5 motion analysis system were used to determine the relationship between the motion of the ski simulator platform $\varepsilon$ and the following performer variables: (a) height of center of mass (COM) h, (b) angle of rotation of COM $\alpha$, and (c) resultant vector $\gamma$. The correlation between $\varepsilon$ and h yielded low to moderate negative values, $\varepsilon$ and $\alpha$ yielded moderate to high positive correlations, and $\varepsilon$ and $\gamma$ yielded moderate to high negative correlations. Qualitative analysis of h graphed against $\varepsilon$ for each individual suggested four participants developed a strategy in which there was no discernable relationship between h and $\varepsilon$, whereas three participants developed a strategy that demonstrated a stronger relationship between the two variables. Kinetic data were obtained via an F-Scan pressure measurement device. Mean force F remained relatively constant across 7 days of testing, but tangential for
$f
(sin\ \alpha)$ progressively increased. Qualitative analysis of F plotted against $\varepsilon$, and of
$f
(sin\ \alpha)$ plotted against $\varepsilon$, indicated a more stable pattern of force production developed across trials. Data supported the following conclusions: (a) the mathematical model proposed by Vereijken, Whiting, and Beek is not tenable in its present form; (b) there were two strategies adopted by the participants with regard to the height of COM, h; (c) a slight phase lag is evident in the application of tangential force, which suggests the variable of interest is angle of rotation of COM, $\alpha,$ and not height of COM, h; and (d) acquisition of slalom-like movements on the ski simulator involves the development of more consistent anticipation timing.
