Emotionally disturbed adolescents typically exhibit low self-esteem in the educational setting. This research examined the self-esteem of these adolescents when they participated in service-learning activities offered in their public alternative high school in order to understand how they felt about themselves when completing acts of service. Self-esteem was examined during open-ended interviews using six students who had graduated one month before the interviews and who had participated in service-learning while attending their high school. The researcher used the interviews to develop overt themes and to identify what phenomenon appeared to exist to aid educators in raising the self-esteem of these students. The researcher estimated the value of service-learning for this population and suggested further research that could utilize the findings in this qualitative study.
