The experiences of these eight actors suggest that acting may be an avenue of both psychological and spiritual growth for those who undertake it with these possibilities in mind.

This dissertation explored the experience of altered states of consciousness (ASCs) by contemporary American actors during performance. The researcher employed a phenomenological methodology. Eight professional actors who self-identified as having the experience were interviewed after a period of reflection on the interview questions. A six-step eidetic reduction adapted from a procedure by Colazzi (1978) was used to distill the essence of the experience from the interview data.

The eight themes were: (1) experiencing performance as a spiritual practice connecting one to oneself, others, and the universe as a whole; (2) experiencing a heightened ability to give and receive in interactions with others on stage, free from the restraints imposed by ordinary life; (3) experiencing a heightened access to a spectrum of emotions, even those not socially acceptable, and the freedom to express them when appropriate to the circumstances; (4) experiencing increased self-knowledge, including those parts of oneself not socially acceptable; (5) experiencing a creative use of self, including heightened potency and effectiveness; (6) experiencing a post-performance re-entry process before returning to ordinary consciousness; (7) experiencing a state of flow which includes the following: (a) heightened clarity about one's needs and intentions; (b) suspension of critical judgement; (c) release from the constraints of time; (d) the alignment of the physical being with intentions; or the transcendence of mind/body duality; and (e) heightened energy; (8) experiencing ASCs as a significant factor in the satisfaction felt from acting.
