Regression modeling demonstrated some heterogeneity among the student group and the athlete sub-groups. The softball group scored lower than the soccer, basketball, and student groups on seven of eight ATI subscales.

Three groups of female respondents completed the ATI: an eating disorder group, an elite athlete group, and a student group. The athlete and student groups also completed the Eating Disorder Inventory-II.

The purpose of this research project was to construct a valid and reliable inventory to identify female athletes at risk for the development of eating disorders. Elite female athletes face conflicting pressures to push the limits of their physical potential whilst continuing to negotiate socially constructed notions of the feminine ideal.

A panel of experts, involved in the treatment of individuals with eating disorders, shaped the development of the Automatic Thoughts Inventory (ATI). The ATI focused on self-referent thoughts aligned with key characteristics, indicative of individuals with eating disorders.

This research sought to examine athlete groups that had not traditionally been considered at-risk for eating disorders. That is, sports were chosen that did not overtly emphasize either leanness or aesthetic presentation for the purpose of performance gain. The respondents in the elite athlete groups were drawn from softball, soccer, and basketball.

The ATI was found to be reliable through test-retest analysis. There was support for the criterion-related validity of the ATI, as the measure demonstrated the ability to distinguish between the criterion eating disorder group and the comparison student and athlete groups. The ATI demonstrated a moderately positive relationship with the diagnostic measure, the Eating Disorder Inventory-II.

The basketball group demonstrated an ATI total mean score higher than the soccer, softball, and student groups. The difference was largely explained through increased scores on the Body Shape and Size subscale. This finding may be attributable to the interaction of meaningful age differences between the groups, with increased body-image anxiety induced through the mandated wearing of a figure-hugging bodysuit as the competition uniform.
