This study compared kinematic and kinetic variables of walking. Three different load conditions (a 20 kg load, a 9 kg load, and no load) and gender were the independent variables in this study. The dependent variables studied were hip and knee angle at three different points in the gait cycle, stance duration, swing duration, maximum vertical ground reaction force at heel strike, time to the maximum vertical ground reaction force at heel strike, maximum braking force, and maximum accelerating force. The purpose of this study was to determine if load carriage using a backpack changes normal walking patterns, and to compare load carriage using a backpack in women and men.

Hip flexion at heel strike and ground reaction forces increased as backpack weight increased for both men and women. Men had significantly greater ground reaction forces than women. Men had significantly greater ground reaction forces than women. When ground reaction forces were normalized by dividing by body weight no significant differences between men and women were found. Kinetic differences in gait were associated with the increase in total weight (participant and backpack). Ground reaction forces increased as backpack weight increased for both men and women. It was hypothesized that kinematic differences were the result of postural changes made by the participant to maintain balance under a backpack load.
